Opera Carmen by Georges Bizet

Carmen (Carmencita) is a French opera by Georges Bizet composed in 1875.
Libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy based on the novel
by Prosper Merimee ‘Carmen’. The story takes place in Spain in the year of
1820, in the city of Seville and the surrounding mountains.
The dark world of factory workers, smugglers, lovers and losers has made it
one of the ten most popular operas in the world. Behind this intense story,
characters openly show strong passion, blind love, jealousy, defiance and
anger. The composer constantly revised the end to boost action and tension.
The sense of intensity of life is often seen during times of war, so we have set
our production in a time of war, the Spanish civil war of the 1930s. A time when
Spanish ‘fascists’ sought to destroy the partisans, when guns were smuggled,
traitors shot, and women declared themselves no longer victims of patriarchal
abuse, but fighters against it – even if it meant their own death.
